For 187 years, the vampire Aeron has lived in the shadow of her former life. Once, she ruled the known world; now she hides from her numerous enemies in a southwest Michigan town. She knows it is necessary, but she wants her vengeance. They had betrayed her, banished her. Their only mistake was not killing her, and they will pay dearly for their lack of foresight. Yet, for now, she must wait—her plans are not quite ready. Soon, though, soon, she will return and the world will know what it means to be afraid once more.

In another corner of that same southwestern Michigan town, James is feeling pressure from all sides. He is graduating from high school in a few months, and he is terrified of leaving the safety of childhood behind. Now he is forced to work with Issy on an assignment for a class he does not want to take. Yet, even after being burned by his last relationship, he cannot help but be entranced by Issy. So much so, he wants to dive head-in without any thought to what it might cost him.
